Become a Tutor - San Gabriel Valley Literacy Council
Volunteer tutors, like you, are the heart of our organization. Without them, we would be unable to educate our learners and serve our community. As a tutor, you will work with learners who want to improve their English skills or who are preparing for the citizenship interview. Learners come to us eager to learn English for a number of reasons, from improving job opportunities, to being able to help their children with their homework. Helping someone learn English gives them skills that impact their families as well as our community.
We provide a 12-hour training session before you begin working with language learners. This training will equip you with the strategies and techniques to give you the confidence and skills you need to begin helping someone learn English.
You do not need any previous teaching experience. The only requirements we have are that you speak English fluently and can volunteer two to ten hours a week.
Once you have completed the training, we will work with you to find a group that suits your schedule and our needs. In addition, we provide our tutors with continued support through workshops and mentoring.
We offer tutor training in January and September in two six-hour sessions held over two Saturdays. Cost is $25 which covers training costs and Council membership. Both sessions must be attended in order to earn and receive certificate.
If you are interested in becoming a tutor, please contact us to reserve your spot in our next training session.
If you have any questions, please email us at volunteer@sgvlc.org or call us at (626) 298-4731.
